The Pi zero is no worse for the mounting holes than the other models of Pi, the problem is that the case is a much snugger fit. If you had your own case (or no case) then the ribbon cable should work just fine on the Pi Zero (once you have soldered on a header). What he said, to get a reliable connection you should solder a header onto the Pi, or solder the wires to the Pi. I recommend soldering on a header. The stock setup for a Pi is a male header on top.
